Rafiqul Islam, a 57-year-old union parishad (UP) member of Bhabanipur union in Mymensigh, has cleared the SSC examination this year, inspiring much optimism in the community.
He has secured a GPA 4.46, and says he’s thrilled to attend college soon.
“I understood the importance of education when I was first elected as UP member in 2016. Since I am responsible for representing the people of my community, I felt compelled to be educated,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
"I cannot ask anyone to get educated if I am not educated myself. This limits my ability to serve my people,” he added.
Following these realizations, Rafiqul got admitted to a local school in his upazila.

The UP member had to drop out of school when he was in eighth grade, due to a physical disability. However, Rafiqul did not lose hope.
With the assistance of his seventh-grader son Maruf, Rafiqul prepared for the battle he dreamt of winning. The father-son duo studied together each day at the same table.
Maruf said that he is very proud of his father, and he enjoyed studying with him throughout.
Rafiqul’s wife, Amena Khatun said: “My husband has ambitious goals, and he strives to achieve them every day. Despite his duties as an UP member, he studied diligently and passed the exams."
Abul Kalam, a teacher at Rafiqul’s school said once Rafiqul expressed regret for the fact that he was not educated enough. "I encouraged him to enroll in school, and I'm proud of his success now."
Rafiqul advised the young generation to study so they can serve the country and the people. His goal is to enlighten himself and the locals through education.
In the second phase of the UP election, he received 473 votes, giving him a second consecutive electoral victory.
