Update : 15 Dec 2021, 03:31 PM

The authorities have exhumed the body of a Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) professor, who died in yet unclear circumstances.

Police dug up the body of Prof Md Selim Hossain in the presence of Kushtia executive magistrate at 10:30am on Wednesday.

The body is currently at the morgue of Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy, said Executive Magistrate Ahmad Sadat.

The body will be reburied in the same grave after the autopsy, according to police.

Prof Hossain’s body has been exhumed following an order from a Khulna court, said Khanjahan Ali police station OC Prabir Kumar Biswas.

On December 3, the university was declared closed till December 13 after the death of Prof Hossain, allegedly due to mental torture and harassment by some Chhatra League activists. The university students were asked to vacate their dorms by 4pm that day.

Besides, a five-member probe committee was formed and asked to submit its report within 10 days.

But the panel could not complete its investigation in time. Considering the recommendation of the probe body, the authorities later extended the closure of the institution till December 23.

Prof Md Selim Hossain, 38, a teacher at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department of the university, was also the provost of Lalan Shah Hall.

According to faculty members of the university, Prof Hossain died hours after some Chhatra League activists, led by Sadman Nahyan Sejan, general secretary of the Kuet unit of Chhatra League, allegedly confined the teacher to his office and mentally tortured him to accept their person of choice as the dining manager of Lalan Shah Hall for the month of December.

During the confinement, the professor had allegedly been subjected to abuses, humiliation and threats, his colleagues said.
