A Tangail court has sent a municipality councilor to jail in a digital security case on charges of making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hafizur Rahman Swapan, the councilor of Tangail’s Ward 16, surrendered to the court on Sunday and moved a bail petition.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Saud Hassan rejected the petition before sending him to jail, said court police’s Inspector Tanvir Ahmed.
On June 5, Councilor Swapan said that he “will not even listen to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina” during a conversation with a person over an argument regarding a land plot. He made several more obscene remarks as well then.
The conversation went viral on social media and triggered a fire storm among the local Awami League leaders and supporters.
On June 9, another municipality councilor started a case against Swapan, who served as a vice-president of the Awami League’s Tangail city unit, under the Digital Security Act.
The person, whom Swapan engaged in an argument, also filed a complaint with the police saying that the councilor had threatened to harm him.
Following the cases, Swapan moved the High Court and secured bail for eight weeks. But it was revoked after the state challenged the decision. The High Court then ordered him to surrender in the lower court within a week.
Meanwhile, the municipality council relieved Swapan from the post of panel chairman and he was also stripped of his post in the city Awami League unit.
