Update : 24 Jun 2023, 06:33 PM

A trawler with 48 cows capsized in the Padma River in Manikganj district on Saturday morning.

Seventeen cows have been rescued so far, but there is still no trace of the remaining 31 cows.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahriar Rahman and Kanchpur Union Parishad Chairman Gazi Bani Islam have both confirmed the matter.

According to the affected traders and locals, the trawler left for Narayanganj with 48 cows from

Sirajganj's Chauhali upazila at around 7am this morning.

Fifteen traders were going to Narayanganj to sell these sacrificial animals. On the way, the cattle-carrying trawler sank in the Padma River at Harirampur upazila's Sutarkandi area around 9:30am. The cattle traders swam to the shore but most of the cows drowned in the river.

Cattle trader Nurul Islam said: "After buying 48 cows from the farmers, we went to Narayanganj in a trawler destined to sell the cows at a cattle market. In the trawler, I had three cows. The trawler capsized due to the powerful river currents as the water level rose. While 17 cows were rescued and the rest drowned in the river."

Upon receiving the news, UP Chairman Gazi Boni Islam, promptly arrived at the river bank near the incident site.

He said: "The traders had been transporting the cows to the Narayanganj sacrificial cattle market by securing them with ropes to the trawler. When the trawler sank, efforts were made to free 17 cows by cutting their ropes. Traders rushed to the shore with their surviving cattle."

Another cattle trader Abdullah said he was transporting four cows to Narayanganj. While one cow was rescued, three others remain missing and are presumed to have been lost.

Similarly, Fazlu, a trader mentioned that he had three cows. Regrettably, only one of the cows could be brought ashore, leaving the fate of the remaining two uncertain.

Zamir Uddin, another cattle trader, said he had eight cows on the trawler. Tragically, none of his cows could be rescued from the river.

Ujjal Munsi said that he had initially brought two cows on board. Unfortunately, only one of the cows could be rescued from the river.

Similarly, Khalek Bepari, another survivor of the incident, said he had nine cows on the trawler. Out of the nine, only two cows were rescued, leaving the fate of the remaining cattle unknown as they have yet to be found.

Faruk, the owner of the trawler, said that the bottom of the trawler may have burst.

UNO Shahriar said: "It was discovered that the trawler had developed a leak, resulting in its submersion along with the unfortunate drowning of the cows. Fortunately, 17 cows were rescued from the river."
