Village defence official killed in elephant attack in Rangamati

According to local sources, he went to perform ablution in the river from his house and did not return home after Fajr Azan on Monday morning

A member of the village defence force died in an attack by a wild elephant in Barkal upazila of Rangamati. 

The deceased is Md Malek Mia, 56. 

The incident took place in Kurkutichari East Ward No 8 of Barkal union of upazila on Monday morning.

According to local sources, Malek Mia went to perform ablution in the river from his house and did not return home after Fajr Azan on Monday morning. Later, the family members searched for him and found his mutilated body in the river bed.

Locals said that the people of that area were always in fear of elephants. Many people have been killed by elephant attacks before. Houses and crops were often damaged by herds of wild elephants.

Barkal police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nashir Uddin confirmed the incident and said that the body had been handed over to the family and a case of wrongful death had been filed in the police station.
