People in Kushtia suffer from severe heat

The temperature in the district may rise further from April 13

People are suffering for the last few days due to intense heat.

Among these people, the working-class people are suffering the most.

Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kushtia's Kumarkhali Meteorological Office, told Dhaka Tribune that the highest temperature recorded in the district was 37.9 degrees Celsius at 3pm on Sunday.

Besides, the highest temperature recorded in the district on Saturday was 37.8 degrees Celsius. The temperature on Friday was recorded at 36.0 degrees Celsius.

He also said that for the last three-four days mild heat wave is flowing over the district. The temperature in the district may rise further from April 13.

Stating that there is no possibility of immediate rain, the official said that there is a possibility that the temperature in the district will exceed 40 degrees from April 13- 15.

Mintu Ali, a van driver in Mirpur town area of Kushtia, said: “It is difficult to drive the van due to the intense heat of Chaitra (Bengali month). It is so hot that standing on the street is becoming difficult. People are going out less because of the heat. As a result, our income has decreased.”

Raja Malitha, a farmer of the same area, said: “It is not possible to work in the field due to the heat of the sun. We are poor people. If we don't work, our family can't survive, so we have to work in the field under the sun.”

Hasan Ali, a fruit trader in Kushtia's Mirpur market, said: “People are leaving their homes less during the day due to the sun. As a result, sales have decreased significantly during the day.”

Md Shahidul Islam, manager of the local club, said: “People have suffered greatly due to the intense heat wave. People are also having trouble keeping fast in this summer. Still, devout Muslims are fasting.”

In this regard, Dr Saffat Hossain Rana, medical officer of Bheramara Free Hospital in Kushtia, told Dhaka Tribune that diseases like diarrhoea, fever, cold and cough have increased due to heat flow; particularly children are suffering from diarrhoea, cold and fever.

He also said that people are suffering from abdominal pain due to eating more fried food during the month of Ramadan. He insisted on avoiding fried foods.
