Protesting students denounce inaction of RU authorities and police during Saturday's clash

Update : 12 Mar 2023, 03:22 PM

Rajshahi University (RU) students on Sunday locked up the institution's administrative building demanding justice over the clash that broke out on Saturday night, which left over 200 injured.

They started taking positions in front of the building at around 9am, and locked the building at 10:30am.

The agitated students alleged that they were attacked because the university administration failed to intervene.

The students have also placed several demands, which include ensuring the safety of students from locals and police, stopping the entry of outsiders into the university, making the university 100% residential, ensuring proper medical treatment for injured students, and taking necessary action within 24 hours of an incident.

In this regard, Amanullah Khan, a student at the university, said: "The role of the police was largely passive in Saturday's incident. Taking advantage of their inaction, the locals attacked us. If our demands are not met, the movement will continue.”

He demanded the resignation of the university's proctoral body and student advisors.

Meanwhile, RU Vice Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar is facing pressure from the agitated students.

During his visit to the administrative building, the students chanted various slogans against him.

The situation on the campus is returning to normal on Sunday morning, with the university authorities scheduled to have a meeting with law enforcement.

Meanwhile, the presence of students and traffic inside the campus was comparatively low in the morning, due to classes and exams for Sunday and Monday being suspended due to the clash.

The students announced that they would gather in front of Shaheed Dr Shamsuzzoha Chattar of the university at 10am.

More than 200 people, including campus journalists, were injured in the clash that broke out between Rajshahi University students and locals on Saturday.

In the evening, an altercation between a student of the university and employees of a bus over bus fare reportedly snowballed into a clash with local shopkeepers.

During the clash, the students allegedly set fire to several shops in the area, and the police box adjacent to the Binodpur gate of the university was also vandalized.

On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

The students later occupied the university premises while locals were outside the campus.

Meanwhile, seven platoons of the BGB along with additional policemen were deployed to maintain law and order.

The situation reportedly calmed down after 11pm.
