Bangladesh Students Federation on Wednesday brought out a procession and held an agitation rally in Barisal, protesting at the upsurge in prices of essential commodities.
The organization held a rally amid chants condemning the continuous price hike. The agitation rally also demanded the distribution of government-owned land to the homeless.
The procession started near Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall and ended in front of the Barisal District Commissioner's office.
Bangladesh Students Federation Barishal District Vice President Hashib Ahmed presided over the rally. Students Federation Barishal University Branch Convener Zaman Kabir, Ganotantrik Mancho and Bhasani Anusari Parishad Barishal district leader Abdul Mannan addressed the rally.
“Low-income people's lives have become miserable since their expenses have doubled but their earnings have not increased accordingly,” speakers said at the rally.
Dhaka Tribune“The government has lost its control over the kitchen market's price as it surrenders the power to the syndicate. By doing these, the government puts the people's lives at risk”, the speakers continued.
The working class families of Barisal have been protesting for a very long time, calling for reducing the price of essentials, the expulsion of syndicates, and the provision of land to the landless.
The protesters also issued a warning and said: “Lower-income families will take strict measures if the demands are not met."
