A school teacher at Chandganj ASM Bi-Mukhi High School and College in Dinajpur has been accused of beating up students for not wearing school dress Wednesday morning.
The accused in Nazrul Islam, an assistant teacher of the school.
Sources said that on the day, Nazrul noticed some students without uniforms in the assembly. Later, he called on 8-10 of those students to his room and beat them with a cane. The students complained against him to their parents after they were sent home.
Eight grader student Saurabh said: “When we were called, we told him the tailors said they will give the uniforms after two days. Then the headmaster said that there is no need to beat us. However, he had still beaten us.”
Shahnewaz Islam Shakil, a student of the seventh grade, said: “I had a white shirt on, just no uniform pants. That is why Nazrul sir started beating to the point of breaking the cane.”
Similar to him, another student Asif Hasan Rimon said he was beaten for not having the uniform pants.
Seventh grader Siam requested the teacher saying the tailor would give the pants by the next day, still he would not stop beating.
In this regard, Siam's mother said: “Such treatment was completely unfair. If the child had misbehaved, I would have accepted, they disciplined the child. This school dress was not compulsory earlier. If they had told me before, I would have sent my child in school dress.”
In this regard, Chandganj ASM Bi-Mukhi High School and College Principal SM Shahjahan Chowdhury said: “There are about 1,000 students in our school. The market is next to the school. To help recognize the students we talked about school uniforms.”
“However, the way Nazrul Islam had beaten the students was actually saddening. We discussed this with the local public representatives. We will discuss with the governing body of the school and take necessary action against him,” he added.
The accused teacher could not be seen in the school following the incident. However, when contacted over phone, he said: “It is not a big deal. I just wanted to discipline the students but the parents took it too far.”
