Two people have been allegedly beaten to death on suspicion of stealing cattle in Narail.
The incident took place at around 3:30am on Monday in Birgram upazila of Narail, confirmed Mahmudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar police station.
Police recovered one body from the grain field on the north side of the rural power station on the Narail-Gobra road and another from a mahogany plantation on the south side, he said.
One of them was identified as Asadul Sheikh of Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat while the identity of the other person was still unknown, the OC added.
Their bodies have been sent to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case has been registered in Sadar police station, he added.
According to the police and locals, the village people started keeping watch at night when several cattle of Ram Biswas of Wazirpur village were stolen last month. Due to several theft incidents, the people of these villages started patrolling at night regularly.
On Monday night around 3:30am, Rebo Biswas of Birgram started screaming and called others for help after seeing suspicious movement at his home. Hearing his screams, locals gathered and managed to nab the thieves.
Ashish Kumar Biswas, chairman of the local Kalora union, said they were part of a gang that used to recce the area while selling blankets, dishes and other goods as vendors. They used to collect information at this time and come back to steal at night. For these reasons, the village people started keeping watch at night.
