The food authorities have filed a case against unidentified thieves after some 1,124 sacks of rice, weighing around 33 tons, disappeared from a sealed warehouse at Sariakandi in Bogra.
Sariakandi police station Officer-in-Charge Rajesh Kumar Chakraborty confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Friday.
Earlier, Bogra Executive Magistrate Jannatul Nayeem seized 1,130 sacks of rice, believed to be gobbled from the government's food-friendly program, during a mobile court operation at the rice warehouse of Shahin Alam of Bagber village of the upazila.
The trader failed to produce the necessary documents and was fined Tk50,000. In addition, the warehouse was sealed off, and Upazila Food Controller Atiqur Rahman was responsible for looking after it.
Dhaka TribuneThe warehouse was set up in an under-construction building with no doors and windows and surrounded by CI sheets.
Recently, a rumour of rice sacks being moved from the warehouse spread in the area, and the administration launched an investigation.
On Thursday, the probe committee headed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rezaul Karim visited the warehouse and found only six sacks, each having 30kgs of rice.
But they did not share the information with the journalists at the scene and left after two hours.
