Written exam held in Rangpur to select BCL leaders

The questions were made from two books of Bangabandhu -- ‘The Prison Diaries’ and ‘The Unfinished Memoirs’

The Rangpur district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Saturday conducted a written test to elect leaders for two units of Pirgacha Upazila.

Some 34 candidates took part in the 30-minute test, with 50 marks, after facing viva voce. The exam was held at Pirgacha Upazila Parishad Auditorium at around 3pm.

Among them, 27 are from the Pirgacha Upazila unit and the others are from Pirgacha Government College.

The questions were made from two books -- “The Prison Diaries” and “The Unfinished Memoirs” -- by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

District unit BCL President SM Sabbir Ahmed said that those who would lead the organization should be talented.

“Many people do not understand Bangabandhu's ideals, but they were still elected as leaders. Hence, if a test is taken, the new leader would be able to learn more about the Father of the Nation.”

He also noted that this exam had opened a new chapter in history.

“This system will be followed in the future elections of Chhatra League leaders in every upazila and educational institution,” Sabbir hoped.

According to party sources, the council of the district unit would be held soon as the committees of 23 units of upazila, municipality, and colleges under the district unit have already expired.

Earlier, the organizational conferences of Kaunia Upazila and the college branch were completed. A written test was held for that as well.

BCL's former and present activists have welcomed the initiative as exceptional in selecting leaders.

District unit BCL General Secretary AKM Tanim Ahsan Chapal said: “After we got the responsibility, the first organizational meetings for Kaunia Upazila and Kaunia College units were held officially.”

He said such an initiative would play an effective role in spreading Bangabandhu's ideals among the BCL leaders and activists.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also instructed us to read the two selected books,” he added.

General Secretary of Pirgacha Upazila unit Awami League Abdullah Alam Mahmud Milon said the way the BCL leaders were selected could be an example for the whole country.

General Secretary of district unit Awami League Rezaul Karim Raju said that the BCL leaders should be more careful in the election.

“No non-students, drug addicts or married persons should be in the leadership. Election of leaders through examinations is an excellent initiative for the Chhatra League,” he added.
