A 10-year-old child was tortured and beaten up in Banaripara upazila of Barisal district for allegedly stealing papayas.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon in the west- Awar village of the upazila.
Injured Sanjoy Biswas is the son of Priyo Lal Biswas of that village and has been admitted to a local upazila health complex.
The child's mother, Dipti Biswas, filed a written complaint at Banaripara police station on Sunday, said Inspector Mominuddin.
“Legal action will be taken if the allegation is proved,” he said.
Dipti Biswas said 45-year-old Abdur Rob, tortured Sanjoy for allegedly stealing two papayas from one Milon Munsi's garden.
He heavily punched the boy in the stomach, she added.
Later that night, Sanjoy fell ill with stomach pain and was admitted to the Banaripara Upazila Health Complex.
Several tests at the facility found injury marks on his abdomen, said the child's mother.
However, accused Abdur Rob denied the allegation saying he did not punch the child but only grabbed his throat to threaten him.
