One held for kidnapping, sexually assaulting madrasa student in Sylhet

Police have detained a man in connection with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a madrasa student in Sylhet. 

The arrestee is Nazrul Islam alias Menu Mia, 52. 

The madrasa student who was kidnapped from Rashidpur area in Dakshinsurama has also been rescued, said police. 

According to police, a sixth grader student of Umarpur Title Madrasa (Qaumi Madrasa) of the upazila was kidnapped on October 9. He was later held in a hotel and sexually assaulted besides demanding ransom from the family.

In a press briefing on Saturday, Sylhet Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdullah Al Mamun said that the police rescued the victim in front of Fulkali showroom in Rashidpur, Sylhet at about 9pm on Saturday. 

Later, police detained the abductor Menu Mia with the help of information technology from Shaistaganj of Habiganj.

On Sunday, a case had been filed at Osmaninagar police station in this connection. 

An operation is underway to arrest others involved in this incident.

The SP said that the family of the victim paid Tk1,000 to the abductors as ransom.
