Three people including the mayor of Baraiyarhat municipality have been shot in Mirsharai upazila of Chittagong.
Mayor Rezaul Karim Khokon, who is also general secretary of the Awami League’s Baraiyarhat municipality unit, Ashok Sen, labour affairs secretary of Hinguli union Awami League, and Shahid Khan Dukhu, a Jubo League leader from Osmanpur union, were shot and wounded at in the Muhuri Project area at around 10:30am on Friday.
Zorarganj police station OC Noor Hossain Mamun confirmed the matter.
The mayor was in a critical condition, the police officer said.
Mofizul Haque, chairman of Osmanpur union parishad, said the mayor visited the area after learning about illegal sand extraction there.
Khokon and Ashok are receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital and Dukhu at Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex.
