4 sent to jail, 2 air-passengers fined for flouting ilish ban

Law enforcers said they seized 5,000 metres of illegal fishing net during the drive

Four fishermen were sent to jail by a mobile court at Hijla in Barisal on Friday for flouting a ban on fishing, transportation and sale of ilish fish.

Moreover, two others were fined for carrying ilish on a flight.

Police detained six fishermen during a drive at Hijla, and a mobile court sent four of them to jail, on the first day of the 22-day ban on catching Ilish. Two other arrestees were released on bail, said police.

Catching, selling and transportation of Ilish will remain prohibited during the period to ensure the safe spawning of the mother hilsa.

Law enforcers said they also seized 5,000 metres of illegal current net during the drive.

Bikash Chandra Dey, an inspector and in-charge of Hijla marine police unit, told Dhaka Tribune that they conducted the drive in coordination with fisheries officers and the Coast Guard in the morning.

Meanwhile, two passengers named Alamgir and Manash were fined Tk5,000 each at the Barisal airport for carrying Ilish.

Executive Magistrate and Babuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nusrat Fatima fined the duo, District Fisheries Officer Bimal Chandra Das confirmed.
