A Muslim youth drowned on Wednesday in the Brahmaputra river while attending an idol immersion ceremony in Jamalpur.
The deceased was identified as Akash, 22, Jamalpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Senior Station Officer Rabiul Islam Akand confirmed
According to locals, to join the Durga Puja festivities, Akash and his friends attended the immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga in the Brahmaputra River in the old Ferighat area of Jamalpur city on Wednesday evening.
Locals claimed that Akash was intoxicated at the time and climbed on top of the idol. At one point, he slipped and fell into the river.
Upon receiving information, Jamalpur fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued him in an unconscious state around 8pm. He was taken to Jamalpur District General Hospital. where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Sojaur Rahman Rana, the father of the deceased, said that every year Akash joins the idol immersion ceremony with his friends. He left home on Wednesday afternoon to attend the idol immersion ceremony. At around 8:30 pm, they received the news of Akash's drowning.
Fire service Senior Station Officer Rabiul Islam Akanda said that the body was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital Morgue. Necessary measures will be taken in this regard after receiving the autopsy report, he added.
