Awami League activist stabbed to death in Bogra

It is suspected that Murtaza's murder was planned as retaliation for stabbing another man named Sohag

A local activist of the ruling Awami League has been stabbed to death in Sherpur upazila of Bogra.

The incident took place at the Upazila Parishad square of Sherpur around 7:30pm on Wednesday. 

The deceased was identified as Murtaza Kawsar Abhi, 38. 

The police recovered the body and sent it to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SHJMEC) hospital morgue.

Atoar Hossain Khandkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Sherpur Police Station, said the immediate cause of the death of Awami League acitivist remained unknown. 

Police and eyewitnesses said that Murtaza Kawsar was the organizing secretary of Sherpur Municipal Awami League proposed committee. 

While going to a shop in the upazila parishad square to wash his motorcycle around 7:30 pm on Wednesday, a group of 10/12 miscreants armed with various local weapons attacked him. 

Locals claimed that Murtaza stabbed a man named Sohag a few days earlier as a result of a conflict over establsihing supremacy in the neighborhood.

They alleged that the murder was planned as a retaliation for the assault.

Sherpur Municipal Awami League President Sarwar Rahman Mintu and General Secretary Salam Hossain expressed their outrage and promptly demanded the capture and punishment of the murderers.

Ataur Rahman Khandkar, office-in-charge (OC) of the Sherpur police station, said: "Police are working to arrest the perpetrators. If there is a case against Murtaza, it is being explored.”
