Update : 26 Sep 2022, 01:33 PM

The probe body formed over the boat capsize in Panchagarh’s Korotoa River has initially blamed that the boat was carrying more passengers than its capacity.

Dipankar Roy, head of the probe body said that the preliminary investigation shows that the boat was overcrowded, reports Bangla Tribune.

However, he also noted that there may be other reasons behind why the boat sank, but that will be revealed after the committee finishes its investigation.

“We are still looking into the matter. We are hoping to submit the report to the district administration by Tuesday night,” he added.

When asked if the terminal’s lessee was responsible for the boat carrying more passengers than usual, he said: “We are yet to find him, maybe he went into hiding after the incident.”

The death toll from Sunday’s boat capsize has risen to 32 with the recovery of seven more bodies on Monday.

The identities of the seven new victims could not be known immediately.

Three diving units of the Fire Service started their recovery operation in the river on Monday morning.

Many are still missing, according to families waiting on the riverbank.

The trawler, carrying 60-70 passengers including women and children, capsized in the middle of the river while heading towards Badheshwar Temple on the occasion of Mayalaya at around 2:30pm on Sunday.
