Passport official transferred for assaulting service recipients

The Immigration and Passport Department has transferred a deputy director of the Comilla Regional Passport Office for assaulting a service recipient and two journalists. 

Deputy Director Md Nurul Huda has been attached to the Dhaka Divisional Passport and Visa Office.

Immigration and Passport Department Director General Major General Mohammad Ayub Chowdhury made the announcement in a media statement on Monday. 

Huda is among the 12 passport officials who have been transferred, the statement said. 

Meanwhile, the deputy director of Jessore Regional Passport Office, also named Mohammad Nurul Huda will now take charge as the deputy director of Comilla Regional Passport Office.

Deputy assistant director of Comilla Passport Office, Sheikh Mahabur Rahman said: “I have not received any documents. Besides, transfers are normal processes.”

On April 18, Deputy Director Nurul Huda reportedly threw a chair at three people including a service recipient, Shakib. 

Later local journalists learned about the matter  and went to inquire about the incident. They were humiliated and their mobile phones taken away. 

A video of the incident went viral on social media which was brought to the court’s attention. 

On April 26, Abbas Uddin, senior judicial magistrate of a Comilla court, ordered the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to investigate the matter. 

The case was handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) who investigated the matter and submitted a report to the court on August 12. 

On August 16, the court ordered summons against Deputy Director (DD) of Comilla Passport Office Nurul Huda.
