To overcome the gas crisis, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) has taken the initiative to re-extract gas from Well No 1 of Sylhet's Biyanibazar gas field on Saturday after five years.

Sylhet Bureau expects to extract five million cubic feet of gas per day from this abandoned well.

Bapex Managing Director Mohammad Ali said: "We expect to get five to seven million cubic feet of gas per day from this well."

He inaugurated the excavation work of the abandoned Well No 1 of the gas field at Biyanibazar in the afternoon.

He added that in the meantime, seven to seven and a half million cubic feet of gas is being extracted daily from Well No 2.

He also said that the re-digging of the well will be completed by early December and the production will be increased to 164 million cubic feet by 2025.

Gas production by the Well No 1 began in 1999 and it was closed in 2014. The gas production resumed in early 2016 and the well was declared abandoned on October 14, 2017. However, Bapex found out that there is still reserved gas available in this well.

At present, the Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) has five gas fields under its umbrella -- Haripur Gas Field, Rashidpur Gas Field, Chhatak Gas Field, Kailashtilla Gas Field and Beanibazar Gas Field.

However, the Chhatak Gas Field is currently abandoned. The remaining 12 wells are currently producing 91 million cubic feet of gas per day.
