The police arrested a Jubo League leader masquerading as a sub-inspector of Tarash police station during a robbery in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj late on Friday.
The arrested is Rahat Khan Rubel, 32, publicity secretary of the upazila unit of Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League.
The law enforcement agency arrested him in the Berkhari area following a call to 999.
According to locals, Rubel, posing as a police officer, held up a motorcycle and alleged that the three youths on it had drugs in their possession. He demanded they give him money, threatening to take them to the police station otherwise.
Rubel and an accomplice had also grabbed the key of the motorcycle, locals added.
Tarash police station OC Shahidul Islam said the three youths were returning home on the motorcycle in the evening.
The three had told Rubel that they did not have any cash on them, before saying that they would call home for money, added the OC. “But they dialled 999. Later, the police rescued them and arrested Rubel,” the police officer added.
Rubel would face legal action, Shahidul said.
Hossain Ali Rubel, organizing secretary of the local Jubo League unit, said he had heard about the incident. “I called the president and general secretary to discuss the issue, but neither picked up.”
