The names of twins born in Comilla, who were initially named Padma and Shetu after the Padma Bridge, have been changed to Umme Honey Aisha and Arohi Akhi.
Their mother, Sabikun Nahar Jhumur, on Tuesday said: “Upazila health worker Dr Kamrul Hassan Sohel named the two girls Padma and Shetu after their birth on June 21. They were later given Islamic names on June 27.”
The grandfather of the babies, Shukur Ali, said their relatives had insisted on changing the names to Islamic ones, so their father, Md Shohag, an expat living in Saudi Arabia, had chosen the names Umme Honey Aisha and Arohi Akhi.
Dr Kamrul of Barua Upazila Health Complex said they had been named Padma and Shetu with the family’s consent. “It is up to them if they want to change it now.”
