The lawmaker representing the Tangail 8 constituency, Md Joaherul Islam, has claimed to be the poorest member of parliament in Bangladesh.

The Awami League lawmaker was speaking at an event in Sakhipur upazila of the district on Thursday.

“I never take part in any club functions where I have to pay even Tk10,000. Even they know that I am the poorest MP. Many politicians do not come to my home because of my honesty,” he said.

Joaherul, who is also general secretary of the district unit of the ruling party, added that he had to face a lot of criticism, even from his family, but he had never strayed from the path of righteousness.

The lawmaker said he had achieved success in his work and stayed patriotic throughout his life.

“I do not make statements just for the sake of it; I act on them. I fulfil my responsibilities as a worker at the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
