The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested five members of a gang posing as officers of the specialized police unit in Tangail.
The arrestees are Rabiul Karim Shulobh, 30, Masum Billa alias Munna, 28, Yusuf Kazi, 70, Zakir Hossain Babu, 33, and Selim Mia, 36, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarkar Mohammad Kaiser told a media call on Friday.
Around Tk2,00,000, two sets of DB uniforms, a signal light, a wireless set, and three mobile phones were recovered from their possession.
On April 10, the gang, wearing DB police uniforms, stopped Rasel Mia, an employee of Bkash, in front of Shamsul Haque College in Kalihati upazila, before asking him to get down from his motorcycle.
“The gang then forced him into a microbus and snatched Tk6,00,000 from him. Rasel was beaten up and left with severe injuries in the Gharinda Bypass area of Tangail Sadar upazila,” said the SP.
On April 19, Rasel filed a case at Kalihati police station in connection with the incident.
The five detainees are named in several cases filed at different police stations, according to police.
