Two men convicted of the 2003 murder of Chittagong railway official Shafiuddin Ahmed were executed at Comilla Central Jail late on Tuesday.

Senior Jail Superintendent Shahjahan Ahmed said Shipon Hawladar and Naimul Islam Emon—both residents of Chittagong—were hanged at 11.30pm.

Once all legal procedures were completed, their bodies would be handed over to their families, he added.

On June 14, 2003, Shafiuddin was shot dead at his home in North Ambagan Railway Quarters of Khulshi in Chittagong.

Later, the wife of the victim, Mahmuda Begum, filed a murder case at Khulshi police station.

On November 25, 2004, the Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Shipon and Naimul to death, and seven others to life imprisonment.

Four other accused in the case were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
