Narayanganj trawler capsize: Families protest as 10 remain missing

Several teams searched for missing passengers over past four days

Update : 09 Jan 2022, 12:17 AM

The families of the ten missing people in the incident of the drowned trawler protested by setting fire to tires on the banks of the Dhaleshwari in Dharmaganj on Saturday (January 6) at noon and blocking the road.

The families are desperately waiting to hear news about even the dead bodies of the missing people. Four days after the incident, the rescue workers could not find the missing trawler. The protestors are doubting the credibility of their rescue efforts.

Jasmine Begum's relative Abdur Rahman, who went missing with her three children, said, "So many bodies have disappeared together?" The trawler can't even find it. They come somehow, then leave after 2-3 hours. The same picture every day. Will we get the bodies at all?”

Coastguard sources, meanwhile, said they thought the trawler was buried under river mud. And the corpses can be like boats, floating away with the current.

Lieutenant Commander Abdur Rahman, Assistant Deputy Director, Coast Guard Headquarters, said, "Our operations are ongoing from 8 am to 5 am every day. Our campaign will continue until further notice.”

Meanwhile, Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin told the Dhaka Tribune that the fire service, naval police and coast guard diving team have been working every day for the last four days since the incident. “Our rescue operation will continue until the missing are found.”

Earlier on Thursday morning, Babu Lal Vaidya, acting deputy director of BIWTA's maritime security department, filed a case with Fatullah Model Police Station accusing three people, including the launch's master, of negligence and whimsicality in the sinking of a trawler by MV Farhan-6.

The accused are launch master Md. Kamrul Hasan, 40, driver Md. Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan, 40, and Sukani Md. Jasim Mollah, 30.

Narayanganj Judicial Magistrate Kazi Mohsin's remand hearing was set for Sunday (January 9) after the accused applied for a five-day remand.

It may be mentioned that the trawler with at least 60 passengers sank when it was hit by a passenger launch named MV Farhan-6 in the Dhaleshwari river in Dharmaganj, Fatulla, in Narayanganj Sadar upazila at around 8:30am on Wednesday. Ten people, including children, have been missing since the incident.
