Senior BNP leader Moazzem Hossain Alal has been sued in Khulna under the Digital Security Act for making indecent comments on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Khulna District Lawyers’ Association President Saiful Islam filed the case against the BNP joint secretary general and 10-12 unnamed others with Sadar police station on Sunday.
The case says Alal made derogatory remarks on Sheikh Hasina and Indian premier Narendra Modi during a discussion on October 1.
Alal also said Sheikh Hasina shifted towards Hinduism, though she had sought support of Islamist parties to win the 1996 elections.
The plaintiff alleges that a video of Alal’s speech is also published by the BNP’s YouTube channel, which may create unrest and provoke communal tension.
Video clips of his remarks have also been shared widely on Facebook.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has asked Alal to tender an apology for his remarks.
On December 8, the High Court directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove all videos of the BNP leader from social media.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman brought the matter to the court’s attention.
Earlier, a Dhaka University student filed a case against Alal with Shahbagh police.
Another student submitted a complaint to the police station over the same matter.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Krishak League on Monday staged a demonstration protesting Alal’s indecent remarks about the premier.
The protest was held in front of the Awami League central office in Bangabandhu Avenue.
Krishak League President Shamir Chanda and General Secretary Umme Kulsum Smrity and leaders of Dhaka north and south city units participated in the demonstration.
