Army man hit by falling steel pipe in Sylhet dies

The incident will be investigated and action will be taken against those involved

An army soldier was killed when a steel pipe fell from the roof of an under-construction building of Sylhet City Corporation in Bandar Bazar area of Sylhet town on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Delwal Hossain, a lance corporal in the Army's 50 Field Regiment Artillery, 17 Division, Sylhet. 

He was from Raipur village of Jagirgofar under Rangni Thana of Meherpur district.

According to eyewitnesses, a steel pipe suddenly fell on the soldier's head from the 12th floor of the under-construction building of Sylhet City Corporation at around 2:30pm.

Locals immediately rescued him and took him to Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Mohammad Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sylhet Kotwali police station said that nine people from the contractor company involved in the construction of the building have been arrested for construction work without security measures. The body has been kept in Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue, he added.

17 people have so far been detained for questioning over the incident.

Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury visited the scene immediately after the accident and formed a seven-member committee to look into the matter.

The committee has been asked to submit the report within 72 hours.

"The incident will be investigated and action will be taken against those involved. Besides, measures will be taken to prevent such incidents", added the mayor.
