The mayoral post of Rangpur city corporation (RCC) has fallen vacant after incumbent Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa resigned from the post.
He submitted a letter seeking resignation from his post in the city on Wednesday.
The ministry accepted the resignation and issued a notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Md Zahirul Islam, saying from now the chief executive officer will lead the city corporation.
The notification said the current mayor resigned from his post in order to participate as a candidate for the same post in the upcoming elections of Rangpur City Corporation on December 27.
In this connection, Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa said: “I submitted my resignation letter to the ministry in the afternoon. Since I will contest the upcoming RCC election as a nominated candidate of the Jatiya Party, I resigned as per the law.”
In 2017, Mostafizar was elected mayor after bagging 100,000 votes more votes than his nearest rival.
The ruling party Awami League nominated Adv Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia for the office of mayor in the RCC election.
This time, a total of 393,994 voters will cast their votes at 193 centres to elect the Rangpur mayor, 27 general ward councillors and 11 reserved ward councillors.
According to the schedule, candidates can submit their nomination papers to the returning officer and assistant returning officer until November 29.
The returning officer will scrutinize the nomination papers on November 29 and December 1.
December 8 has been set as the final date for withdrawal of candidature.
The Election Commission has also decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) and CCTV cameras in the election.
