A doctor in Sylhet's Jaintiapur has stabbed a rickshaw puller with a kitchen knife, reportedly as the latter asked for a just fare, triggering outrage among locals who demand the arrest of the attacker.
Later, the police came and calmed down the locals agitating in the residential area of Jaintiapur Upazila Health Complex on Thursday.
The injured, Billal Ahmed, is receiving treatment at the hospital at the authorities’ expense.
The physician in question, Muhibur Rahman Rubel, had been suspended long ago on multiple allegations, said Civil Surgeon Dr SM Shahriar.
On Friday, Officer-in-Charge of Jaintiapur model police station Golam Dastgir Ahmad said the police acted immediately after receiving information about the agitation and controlled the situation.
“We have not received any complaint in this regard,” he added.
According to the police and local sources, the dismissed doctor of the hospital brought gas cylinders to the residential area of the hospital on a rickshaw three times on Thursday but paid only Tk20.
Rubel became angry when the rickshaw puller said the amount was not fair.
At one point, he brought a fruit knife from his dorm and stabbed Billal.
Locals came forward and rescued the injured rickshaw puller upon hearing his cries for help.
The agitated crowd protested the incident and demanded punishment for the doctor.
When asked about the matter, Jaintiapur Upazila Health Family Planning Officer Salah Uddin said he was on leave. Resident Medical Officer Dr Mummy Dash said the rickshaw puller had been given medical care.
