A 24-year-old woman in Comilla was reportedly raped multiple times by her own brother. When her husband got to know of the matter, a false case was filed against him.
According to the husband, he got married to his wife on March 18. On May 8, he got to know that one of her brothers had been raping her for years and she had gotten sick multiple times because of this.
The next day, on May 9, his wife agreed to file a case against her brother. However, her husband recorded her video statement and went to speak to her family.
During the meeting with her family, they reportedly admitted to the matter but asked him to accept it, after which he forbade his wife from keeping in touch with her family.
“My in-laws were spreading lies about me which was hampering the reputation of my family. I was admitted in a hospital for four days over all this,” the husband told Dhaka Tribune.
“On June 23, after I got back home, my wife’s older brother filed a case against me in a Comilla court, falsely accusing me,” he added.
He said that he had informed the local UP member and chairman about the matter but they asked him to wait for the court verdict.
“The rapist accused me of torturing his sister. But I was not home on the day he was talking about and my wife was at her parent’s place,” he added.
The husband said that he was arrested on July 14 and came out of jail on July 20. After that, he submitted proof in front of the court and the case was dismissed. “It was proven that the accused had raped his own sister.”
Following the ordeal, he divorced his wife.
Alamgir Hossain, a resident of the area where the man has his business said: “The husband did want to continue his marriage but they falsely accused him. Everyone in the area knows the actual accused (the woman’s brother) is not a good guy.”
Responding to queries on the matter, the woman’s brother said: “All the allegations are false which is why we filed a case against him.”
He said that his sister’s husband was refusing to give her the Mahr which is why the case was filed.
“She is the youngest among 10 siblings. It's unthinkable that I would do something like this to her,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Tribune correspondent tried to reach the woman in question but a man named Parvez picked up her phone, saying that he was her older brother.
“The court has dismissed the case. We don’t want to talk about it anymore,” he said.
Local UP Chairman Farooque Ahmed said that he had asked both families to sit and talk but the case was filed before that.
