Rifat sworn in as Comilla city mayor

He won the city corporation polls on June 15, beating former mayor Monirul Haque Sakku

Arfanul Haque Rifat has been sworn in as the new mayor of the Comilla City Corporation. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually administered the oath from her Ganabhaban residence on Tuesday. 

All the elected councilors were also sworn in the same day. 

Local Government Minister Tajul Islam administered their oath at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital. 

On June 15, Awami League-backed candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat won the mayoral race with 50,310 votes, beating former two-times mayor Monirul Haque Sakku by a margin of only 343 votes.

As many as 229,920 voters cast their franchise in 640 centres of 105 polling stations.

Five candidates competed for the the post of mayor, 106 for the post of general councillor and 36 for the post of reserved women councillor.
