A nilgai – an endangered animal of the Indian subcontinent – has been slaughtered in a village in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon.
The incident occured in Uttar Mondalpara village under Dharmagar union at around 12:30pm on Thursday, said Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kashem.
Kashem said the animal had been rescued by villagers. They had slaughtered it as it had been ailing, he said, quoting locals.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media which shows some in Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) uniform at the scene.
Dhaka Tribune could not reach the local BGB-50 chief for comment.
Stating that the villagers had been wrong to slaughter the animal, UNO Sohel Sultan said the Forest Department would take further action accordingly.
