A 65-year-old US expatriate was hacked to death in Bogra Sadar Upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Razzak Sarkar, a former Jubo Dal leader. He was a US citizen and lived there with his family, police said.
Police and locals said that the deceased, son of Late Abdul Latif Sarkar, hailed from Mahishbathan village. He had a huge amount of land in his village home and used to reside in the US with his family.
Local people became agitated following the attack on Razzak, who is known for his benevolent character.
Razzak was sitting at a tea stall around midnight after visiting his mother's grave in Mahishbathan village of the upazila. At that time, a group of miscreants led by his nephew Omar Khayyam Sarkar Ropon surrounded him with 10-12 motorcycles and stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons.
Razzak then tried to escape while opening fire on the miscreants using his licensed pistol, but he fell on the road. The miscreants then picked up the pistol and opened fire on Razzak.
Police rescued him and took him to Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead.
Sadar police station Inspector (Investigation) Zahidul Haque said that they had captured Ropon, nephew of the slain Razzak along with two of his aides, on Wednesday morning.
Their private car was stopped in Bogra city and they were frisked. Police found the pistol in their possession.

Ropon is facing several cases filed with the local police station.
Later, two more suspects were arrested.
Besides, Ropon's associates Abdul Hannan, Johnny and Al Amin were admitted to the same hospital with bullet wounds and were also detained, he added.
One foreign pistol and several bullet casings were recovered from the spot.
Police lodged a case against the arrestees over the incident.
Selim Reza, officer-in-charge at Bogra Sadar police station, said that the attack might have happened due to a previous enmity over a land dispute.
The OC said that video footage of the incident showed six to seven people taking part in the attack.
Listed criminal Ropon is also the prime accused in the murder case of Swechhasebak League leader Sakhawat Hossain in 2010, said police.
He lost a finger while making bombs earlier, and since then, he has been introduced as a person with special needs at the court which made it easy for him to get bail as well.
Police said that, even after losing a finger, the notorious killer was known for his point-blank shootings in the locality.
