Police arrested a union parishad chairman and his son from Haidgaon in Patia upazila under Chittagong early on Saturday in connection with the torture of a local Awami League leader.
The arrestees are– BM Jashim, chairman of Haidgaon UP and his son Mushfique Uddin.
Rashedul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patia police station, said a team of police raided Jashim’s house and arrested them in the early hours of Saturday.
“Efforts are on to arrest the other people involved in the incident,” he said.
Earlier on April 29, Jashim and his associates allegedly tortured Jiten Kanti Guho, vice-president of Haidgaon union unit Awami League, after tying up his hands around a tree, in broad day light.
They tortured Jiten reportedly for not inviting the UP chairman in an Iftar party organized by Awami League.
The torture incident went viral on social networking site Facebook which drew a huge flack.
Tapash Kanti Guh, brother of Jiten, said the AL leader is now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and his two hands had been broken.
