A worker was killed and 20 others injured when an under-construction bridge collapsed at Baradam area on the Asambasti-Kaptai road in Rangamati on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Md Rafiq.
Local people said the center of the bridge suddenly collapsed with around 40 workers working on the bridge around 10am.
On information, fire service men reached the scene and rescued the workers.
Fourteen workers were sent to Rangamati Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Another six workers were sent to Rangamati General Hospital where doctors declared Rafiq dead.
Dr Shawkat Akbar Chowdhury, resident physician at the hospital confirmed the matter and said that four of the injured were in critical condition.
One of the injured workers Mansur said: "We were finishing one-fourth of the welding work when the bridge collapsed due to weak wooden beams that were provided for centering the bridge from below.”
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangamati Kotwali police station, said the cause of the accident will be revealed after an investigation.
The injured workers alleged that the bridge collapsed due to the use of substandard materials. The workers also demanded punishment of the contractor.
