Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) platoons have been deployed in different parts of Chittagong district to maintain law and order situation after attacks on Durga Puja venues at Banshkhali and Karnaphuli upazilas on Wednesday
The BGB troops were deployed around 9 pm on Wednesday and they will remain out there till October 16, said Deputy Commissioner Mominur Rahman.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the Hindu devotees are celebrating Durga Puja, the greatest religious festivals of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Sources at the local administration said two platoons of BGB troops have been deployed in Hathazari and Banshkhali upazilas each, one each in Patiya, Sitakunda, Fatikchhari and Chandanish upazilas of the district.
According to police and locals, the Durga Puja venue at the Bura Kali Mandir in Banshkhali upazila was attacked around 7:30pm on Wednesday.
Banshkhali Puja Celebration Council President Ashish Shill said the attack took place from a procession following the incident of Comilla.
The attacker damaged the idols of the venue by throwing brickbats, he said before adding several people at the venue were injured.
Upazila administration chief (UNO) Saiduzzaman Chowdhury said they have deployed additional police forces at the temple soon after the attack and that the “situation was normal”.
In Karnaphuli upazila, a puja venube Jurdha union was attacked by dozens of people, who vandalized the idols.
Karnaphuli police OC Dulal Mahmud said at least 35 people launched an attack around 9pm on Wednesday on the venue by throwing brickbats and stones damaging the idols. He, however, said that the situation was brought under control soon after the incident.
