Organizers of Eid-ul-Fitr jamaat at the historic Gor-e-Shahid Eidgah Maidan in Dinajpur say they will be able to accommodate one million people on the ground this year, after two years of suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are working to make arrangements for around one million people this time as some 600,000 to 700,000 devotees gather here every year,” Parliament Whip Iqbalur Rahim, who is one of the organizers of the Eid jamaat, said on Friday.

Maulana Shamsul Islam Qasemi will lead the Eid congregation.

The 516-foot wide minaret with 52 domes, which is rich in modern architectural style, has been renovated recently.

He further said that the Gor-e-Shahid Eidgah was four times larger than the Sholakia ground in Kishoreganj.

The whip said that the organizers were working tirelessly under the supervision of the district deputy commissioner. Strict security measures would be taken in and around the ground like the previous years, he added.

In 2019, more than 600,000 devotees took part in the Eid congregation in Dinajpur and around 500,000 at Sholakia.

According to the district administration, the area of Gor-e-Shahid Eidgah Maidan is about 22 acres. The construction of the 52-domed Eidgah Minar, built in 2016, has cost Tk3.8 crore.

There is no such big Eidgah in the subcontinent, say the organizers. The tower is made of ceramic while each dome and minar has electric lighting. At night, the Eidgah Minar lits up.

Since 2017, devout worshipers of Dinajpur district and surrounding areas have offered Eid prayers here.

However, due to the Covid pandemic, Eid jamaat was not held in the last two years.
