Strong current disrupts Shimulia-Kawrakandi ferry service

The ferry service of Shimulia-Kawrakandi route on the Padma River has been disrupted for more than a week due to strong current. At least 400 vehicles, including buses and goods-laden trucks, created a long tailback on Monday as the ferry service remained disrupted, reports UNB. Assistant General Manager (AGM) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Shah Newaj Khaled said BIWTC has 17 ferries in its fleet on the route. “The ferries are moving slowly at the Lauhojang point of the river due to strong current which is consuming longer time to cross the river than usual,” he said. Buses and small-size vehicles are getting priority access to the ferries for which trucks remain stuck at the dock for a longer period of time, the BIWTC AGM said.
