A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist was shot in Gazipur while on his way to the mosque to perform Shab-e-Barat prayers on Friday.
The incident took place in Gazipur’s Sreepur around 8pm, said Officer-in-charge (OC) Khandakar Imam Hossain of Sreepur police station.
The victim is 23-year-old Mehedi Hasan Shihab. BCL is the student affiliate of the ruling Awami League.
According to the locals, Shihab left his house for the mosque to perform Shab-e-Barat prayers when some seven to eight men took position at a corner of the mosque on their motorbikes and shot at him. The assailants were wearing helmets.
They shot again when the first bullet missed its target. The second bullet pierced Shihab's left chest.
As the locals rushed forward, the assailants fled. The locals then rushed Shihab to the Mawna Al-Hera Hospital from where he was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Later, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday as his condition did not improve.
A colleague of Shihab, requesting anonymity, said he mentioned the names– Al-Amin, Rubel, Imran, Sadat and Mubarak before being taken to the hospital.
Among them, Imran is accused in multiple drug cases and was released on bail two days before the incident. Another accused, Rubel, has an arms case, according to locals.
The spot was inspected after the incident and the names of the attackers have been collected by talking to the locals, said the OC.
However, no complaint has been lodged with the Sreepur police station yet, said Sreepur police station Inspector (Investigation) Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan.
The police are conducting an investigation into the incident, he said.
