Sujon Hossain, 23, a garment worker from Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat, was fatally shot by law enforcement on August 5 during a jubilant procession celebrating the downfall of Sheikh Hasina.

Sujon, the sole breadwinner of his six-member family, leaves behind a devastated household, including his physically disabled father, Shahidul Islam.

Shahidul, overwhelmed with grief, recounted the tragic events leading to his son’s death. Sujon was participating in the procession when he was shot.

He was rushed to Gonoshastho Hospital, but on-duty doctors declared him dead. His body was returned to the family on August 6, casting a pall of grief over the entire village, where Sujon was laid to rest after a namaz-e-janaza.

Sujon had been supporting his family, which includes three sisters, his mother, and his father, who is unable to work due to a disability. To make ends meet, Sujon worked at a garment factory in Ashulia, near Dhaka. His untimely death has left the family in dire straits.

Speaking through tears, Sujon’s father said: "My son, who was our only provider, has been brutally killed. I don't know how we will survive now."

Local residents have expressed concern for the family, noting that since Sujon’s death, the family has been struggling to even afford food. They shared that Sujon took up the responsibility of his family at a young age, including the marriage of his elder sister, who was later sent back home due to unpaid dowry demands.

The community has appealed to the government and well-off individuals to provide urgent financial assistance to the family, who are in desperate need of support to survive.
