Former finance minister and Awami League Advisory Council Member AMA Muhith has visited his hometown Sylhet for the first time in nearly two years.

He arrived at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport on a US-Bangla Airlines flight at 7:30pm on Monday.

The 88-year-old former minister was greeted by leaders of the Sylhet metropolitan unit of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations upon his arrival.

After returning to his hometown, Muhith said he felt at peace. “Sylhet is my home, and I plan to stay here for some time and explore it.”

During his four-day visit, Muhith plans to attend family events organized on the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday on March 17.

The former finance minister also plans to meet people of different classes and professions as well as district Awami League leaders.

Family sources said Muhith had moved into his ancestral home in the city, and his son Shahed Muhith was accompanying him.

AMA Muhith was born on January 25, 1934 in Sylhet to a political family.

His father, Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz, was a judge and one of the founders of the Sylhet All-India Muslim League and took part in the Pakistan Movement.

Muhith took oath as the finance minister of Bangladesh on January 6, 2009.

The veteran Bangladeshi politician held the office for 10 consecutive years over two terms and has been a member of the Central Advisory Committee of the Awami League.

AMA Muhith is the first finance minister in the history of Bangladesh to place ten consecutive national budgets, taking his tally to 12, including the two he placed during the military regime of HM Ershad.

Muhith retired from government and from his role as member of parliament for Sylhet 1 constituency at the general election of December 2018. His younger brother Dr AK Abdul Momen succeeded him as MP.

The ex-minister was recently hospitalized in Dhaka. He had also tested positive for Covid-19 in July last year.
