A court in Jhenaidah has awarded the death penalty to one person and ordered life imprisonment for five others in murder of a farmer at a village.
In April 2006, Channu Mia was hacked to death in the Sadar upazila’s Karimpur village.
On Tuesday, the court of Additional Sessions Judge 1 sentenced 17 others to a year in jail.
Convict Bazlu Mia has been sentenced to death while convicts Tafser Ali, Abdul Jalil, Titu, Iqtiar and Abdul Alim will have to spend their lives behind the bars, said Additional Public Prosecutor Abdul Khaleq
"We have been able to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt and are satisfied with the verdict,” he told local reporters.
The defence said it would challenge the verdict in the higher court.
According to the case details, Channu Mia was attacked with sharp weapons on April 6, 2006 at his village. He was attacked out of a previous feud.
The victim's father Shahadat Hossain started a case the next day against 30 people, who were charged by police in court in June the same year.
