Fifth sibling dies in Cox’s Bazar hit-and-run

Nine people of the same family were returning home after offering prayers when a pick up van hit them, say police

The death toll in the road accident that left several members of a family has risen to five.

Twenty-four-year-old Swaran Shil succumbed to his injuries at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital Tuesday afternoon following the deaths of his four brothers after being hit by a pickup van on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway earlier in the day.

The incident occurred at 5:30am on the highway at Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria upazila, said Inspector Shafayet Hossain of the local Malumghat highway police station.

“Nine people of the same family were returning home in the morning after performing puja at a local crematorium, when Cox’s Bazar-bound pickup van hit them,” said the police officer quoting witnesses.

One person died on the spot while three others died after being taken to Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital, he said.

The were identified as brothers Anupam Shil, 47, Nirupam Shil, 45, Deepak Shil, 40, and Champak Shil, 30.

Police are trying to track down the pickup and its driver, said Inspector Hossain.
