Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) have gone on a mass hunger strike demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed.
The announcement came minutes after Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni urged the protesting students to sit for a discussion to resolve the ongoing situation at the university.
The minister made the call after meeting a delegation of teachers from Sust at her residence in Dhaka in the evening.
Twenty-four students have been on a hunger strike for the last three days demanding the immediate removal of Sust Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.
The minister said she would send a team on her behalf to the university and talk to the agitating students as she was unable to go there herself due to family reasons.
Regarding the hunger strike, one of the protesting students, Yasir Sarker, said that since the VC had not resigned even after three days of hunger strike by 24 students, they had now decided to go on a mass hunger strike. The hunger strike began at 8pm on Saturday.
Yasir said the VC would be held responsible for any untoward incident from now on.
Meanwhile, three students–Iftekhar Al Mahmood, Samira Farzana and Samiul Ehsan Shakil– have already registered their names for participating in the strike.
Earlier in the day, students in shrouds marched in silent procession with the participation of several hundred protesters at the university roundabout. They went through the different streets of the campus with a symbolic coffin on their shoulders.
The students also brought out a torch rally and burnt the effigy of the VC on the campus.
Meanwhile, a delegation of five teachers from Sust went to Dhaka to meet Education Minister Dipu Moni, said Prof Tulsi Kumar Das, president of the Sust Teachers’ Association.
