The by-polls campaign in Tangail’s Mirzapur is coming to an end on Friday midnight, awaiting the election to be held on Sunday using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
All the five candidates and their supporters are now going from tea stalls to different alleys -- making promises of development and seeking blessings of the voters.
The authorities have deployed four platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to maintain law and order during the election.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of local lawmaker Ekabbar Hossain on November 16, 2021.
District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said that they were conducting mock voting at the polling centers since Friday morning so that the general electorate could easily cast their votes in the EVM.
Each centre will have a team of 17 to 18 members of the police and Ansar on the election day. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Detective Branch team will also be at work.
On the other hand, there will be a striking force of the police and one executive magistrate in each union.
All the five candidates said they were hopeful of winning the polls.
They are Awami League-nominated candidate Khan Ahmed Shuvo, Jatiya Party's Zahirul Haque Zahir, Bangladesh Workers Party's Golam Nawzab Chowdhury, Bangladesh Congress Party's Rupa Roy Chowdhury, and independent candidate Nurul Islam Nuru.
The total number of voters in this constituency is 3,40,379. There are 121 polling stations and 756 polling booths.
