A special tribunal has sentenced a madrasa teacher to eight-year imprisonment in a case filed for raping a five-year-old child inside a mosque in Jamalpur's Dewanganj in 2019.
The convict is the survivor’s teacher, Monirul Islam, 42.
Judge Muhammad Rafiqul Islam of the First Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal handed down the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the case, the child lived with her grandmother in Dewanganj while her parents were RMG workers in Dhaka.
She was a student of a mosque-based child education centre at Bhangar Gram Jame Mosque.
On the morning of October 2, 2019, Monirul raped the girl inside the mosque after asking other students to leave. The girl was bleeding when she returned home and was taken to a hospital.
Her grandmother filed the case with Dewanganj Model police station the following day.
During the trial, the prosecution produced 10 out of 14 witnesses to prove the case.
Judge Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, in the presence of Monirul Islam, also fined him Tk25,000, and three months’ jail in default.
On Monday, a Dinajpur court sentenced a man to life in prison for raping a five-year-old child in 2016.
