Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of a 460-bed integrated cancer, kidney and heart unit at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Sunday.
The prime minister also laid the foundation stone of similar units in the seven other divisional cities.
She joined the event through videoconferencing from Ganabhaban, while Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleq unveiled the plaque on behalf of her. The virtual conference was held in eight divisional cities simultaneously.
The unit will have 115 beds for cancer, 165 for kidney and 180 for heart patients.
KMCH currently provides treatments to cancer, kidney and heart patients on a limited scale. With the introduction of the new unit, patients will get better medical care, hoped Dr Rabiul Hasan, director of the hospital.
With the laying of the foundation stone, the quality of medical care in the southwestern region has already made significant headway, he remarked.
The authorities will build a 15-storey building on the 17-storey foundation.
A 180-bed cancer unit will be constructed on the first to the seventh floor, which will also house brachytherapy and chemotherapy departments.
The 165-bed kidney unit will be on the eighth to the 11th floor. These floors will have a dialysis unit, kidney transplant operation theatre and an ICU for transplant patients.
The 115-bed cardiology unit will be on the 12th to the 15th floor. There will be a CCU, ICU, cardiac operation theatre, pediatric cardiac surgery and catheterization laboratory departments for heart patients on all floors.
Besides, a sewage treatment plant (STP), a power substation, generator lift and a firefighting system will also be installed.
According to KMCH sources, the cost of the project has been estimated at Tk298.54 crore. The construction of the infrastructure will cost an estimated Tk175.72 crore, and medical equipment and other expenditure Tk122.82 crore.
The contract for the project was signed on July 30, 2020 and is supposed to reach completion by June 2022.
