At least 10 people went missing after the trawler, hit by the launch MV Farhan 6, capsized in the Dhaleshwari River on the morning of January 5.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Acting Deputy Director Babu Lal Baidya filed a case against three people at Fatullah model police station over the capsize.
The accused are launch master Kamrul Islam, driver Md Jasimuddin Bhuiyan and “sukani” (steerman) Jasim Mollah.
The Narayanganj district administration also opened an investigation into mid-river collision, Deputy Commissioner Md Mostain Billah told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.
Reckless navigation and an uncontrolled increase in the number of vessels on waterways have led to collisions and have been the leading cause of water accidents in the country since 2005.
According to a 2021 research, collisions accounted for 61.72% of all waterway accidents between 2008 and 2019. These accidents accounted for 53% of fatalities on waterways.
